Greeting Governess Freeda, Jamaica's motto "Out of Many we are One". I didnt know enough about the Indians in Jamaica. So I Googled and got the following information: The time period is the same, the persons who arranged for the people to come didnt consider religion as a factor, and the hindus came first, followed by Muslims, the preist who came were also indentured workers and served their people on a part time basis. When the indentureship period was over many of them became farmers and fishermen and some returned to the professions they had before coming to the West: Barbers, gold smiths, iron smiths. Some became money lenders.They used to name their boy children after gods and heroes, and girl children after godesses, rivers, moods, flowers and important words but that tradition had been abandoned. Most changed their Indian surnames and a few names that survive are Maragh, Singh, Ramdal. They introduced many plants to the island: every Jamaican love Coolie Plum, they also introduced Mango ( East Indian Mango is very expensive and loved) and Tamarind and Jackfruit. As for food - Jamaican love curry. I love curry everthing!!!!!
